About W. Trey

W. Trey Merck built his academic foundation at Clemson University, where he earned a B.A. in sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice in 1987. He remained at Clemson to complete a Master of Education in counseling and supervision in 1991. He later earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina - Columbia in 1997. Those degrees map a path from social sciences and counseling into the law, a sequence that informs how he approaches client matters and courtroom work.

After law school, Merck entered practice in 1998, operating under the name W. Trey Merck Lawyer-at-Law. He is admitted to practice in South Carolina and is authorized to appear in all state courts and in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. His career spans state and federal litigation and courtroom appearances that require procedural knowledge across multiple levels of the system.

Merck holds a Notary Public commission from the South Carolina Secretary of State. That credential complements his legal practice by allowing him to perform notarizations for a range of legal documents. Over the years he has built a practice that relies on steady courtroom presence and direct client interaction rather than on a large firm structure.

He is a member of several professional organizations. Those include the South Carolina Association for Justice, the American Association for Justice, and the American Bar Association. Membership in these groups keeps him engaged with developments in trial practice, legal ethics, and state and federal procedure. It also provides a network of colleagues and resources that can be useful for case strategy and continuing legal education.

Merck’s practice is conducted under his law office name, and he has maintained a steady practice since launching his legal career in 1998. He has litigated matters in state and federal forums and continues to appear regularly in court. He balances courtroom work with client counseling, document preparation, and notarial duties.

He currently concentrates his practice on matters presented in South Carolina state courts and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.
