About W. McCauley
W. McCauley Arnold trained at Duke University for his undergraduate degree and then earned his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law. He completed a traditional legal education and moved into a practice that crosses both state and federal lines. His academic background provided a foundation for work in litigation, alternative dispute resolution and financial advisory roles.
Arnold is admitted to practice in a wide array of forums. His admissions include the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. Claims Court, and multiple federal district courts, including the Eastern District of Virginia. He is also admitted in several states and jurisdictions, including Virginia, Maryland, Texas and the District of Columbia.
Early in his public life he served on the Town of Clifton Council, a role he held from 1986 to 2006. For much of the 1980s and early 1990s he sat on the American Arbitration Association’s Panel of Arbitrators, a position that placed him in the center of commercial and civil arbitration matters. He has held professional roles at McCandlish & Lillard, P.C., where he is listed as counsel and is associated with the firm’s Leesburg office. His career path blends courtroom work, arbitration and local civic involvement.
His professional credentials include certification as a Certified Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and designation as a Certified Financial Planner. The trial advocacy certification signals specific training and peer recognition in civil trial practice. The financial planning credential complements litigation work that touches on estates, fiduciary matters and complex financial disputes. Those two credentials together frame how he approaches litigation and client advice.
Colleagues and clients have relied on him in matters that require both courtroom presence and negotiated settlements. He has experience alternating between tried cases and arbitrations, and he has served as counsel on matters that required appearances in federal appellate and trial courts. His background in local government adds a layer of practical perspective on municipal and administrative issues.
He currently serves as counsel at McCandlish & Lillard, P.C., and he practices across federal and state tribunals, handling civil trials, arbitration matters and financial-planning related legal issues.
