About Tonya R.

Tonya R. Coles made an uncommon transition from the liberal arts into the law. She earned a B.A. in Public Relations and English from Otterbein College in 1993, then returned to school to earn her J.D. from Capital University Law School in 2002. The trajectory is clear: communication skills and close reading carried her into a courtroom and a practice that serves community needs.

After law school she established herself in Ohio. She is admitted to practice in that state and has built a practice that intersects with public service. Early on she began working with local referral networks and legal aid providers. Those connections have been steady. They shaped both the kinds of cases she accepts and the clients she represents.

Her work with nonprofit and community groups spans nearly two decades. She has served on the board of the J Ashburn Jr. Youth Center since 2008. She joined ProSeniors, Inc. as a referral lawyer in 2008 and has been a referral lawyer for the Legal Aid Society of Columbus since 2007. Those roles indicate a long-term relationship with organizations that serve older adults and low-income residents. Coles has taken cases that came through those channels and offered legal help to people who might not otherwise find it.

Coles operates from a small office environment. Her practice is organized under the Law Office of Tonya R. Coles. Operating a solo or small practice can require wearing many hats. She manages client intake, case work and the business details that let a practice keep going. The office structure also allows for a direct attorney-client relationship from start to finish.

Her educational background in public relations and English shows in how she approaches a file. Coles tends to emphasize clear written work and direct communication. She applies skills learned in undergraduate study and law school to explain options to clients and to draft pleadings and other documents.

Outside client work she remains connected to community groups through ongoing referral arrangements and board service. That connection has been a throughline in her career. She practices in Ohio and her work at the Law Office of Tonya R. Coles includes matters referred by ProSeniors and the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, serving clients across the state.
