About Tony Allen

Tony Allen Gibbens combines technical training and legal education in a career that crosses disciplines. He began his academic path at Purdue University, earning a B.S. in computer science and mathematics in 1987 and an M.S. in electrical engineering in 1990. He later added an MBA in information technology management and strategy from Indiana University Bloomington in 1999, and completed a J.D. at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2008.

After law school, Gibbens moved into practice quickly. Early roles included serving as of counsel at Brannon & Associates, P.C., in 2009. That same year he co-founded Cochrane & Gibbens, LLC, where he worked on intellectual property, bankruptcy, and immigration matters. Those years were a period of establishing a multi-practice approach that drew on his engineering and business background.

In 2014 he changed course again, taking on work at Davis and Sarbinoff as a patent lawyer and family law lawyer while also establishing his own practice, Tony A. Gibbens, Attoney at Law. The dual roles show the breadth of his practice: technical patent work alongside family law matters. He has steered private cases and advised clients on patent prosecution and related intellectual property concerns, and he has handled domestic matters typical of family law practice.

Gibbens is active in local professional circles. He has been a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association since 2008. He joined the Central Indiana Association of Collaborative Professionals in 2014 and maintains that membership. He served on the board of the Domestic Violence Network from 2013 to 2015, a position that placed him in the nonprofit side of family and domestic issues.

His background in computer science, electrical engineering, and IT strategy informs the patent and intellectual property work he carries out. The combination of technical degrees and a law degree creates a practical match for patent prosecution and related disputes. He has also advised clients on bankruptcy and immigration matters in earlier firm roles, and has continued to handle a mix of civil and family-based matters in private practice.

Gibbens maintains a private practice in Indiana. He is licensed in the state and continues to accept matters in patent law, intellectual property, and family law while handling related civil issues that arise in his clients’ cases.
