About Thomas. R.

Thomas. R. Morris is a Michigan-educated lawyer whose legal training began at Michigan State University, where he earned a B.A. in international relations in 1978. He continued his studies at the University of Michigan Law School and received his J.D. in 1983. Those academic years laid the groundwork for a career centered on business and bankruptcy matters in state and federal courts.

He began practicing law in the mid-1980s, joining Schlussel, Lifton as an attorney in 1985. Five years later he moved into firm leadership as a shareholder at Shefferly, Silverman & Morris in 1990. He remained involved in that firm as it evolved, becoming a member of Silverman & Morris, P.L.L.C. in 2003. In 2021 he took a role at Morris & Morris Lawyers, P.L.L.C., where he continues to practice.

Morris’s work has involved creditor and debtor rights and the business-law issues that surround insolvency and restructuring. He represents parties in contested bankruptcy proceedings and handles related litigation in Michigan courts and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. His practice combines courtroom advocacy and transactional counseling, addressing claims resolution, secured transactions, and creditor remedies.

He has been active in professional circles that touch on bankruptcy and business law. Morris has been a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute since 1996. He joined the State Bar of Michigan’s Creditor/Debtor Rights Committee in 1987 and remains listed as a current member. He also served on the Business Law Section Council from 2009 to 2015. Those roles have kept him engaged in committee work and in discussions about changes to creditor-debtor law at the state level.

Colleagues and clients describe him as steady in proceedings and pragmatic in negotiations. He tends to favor straightforward analysis and clear options. Courtroom hearings sit alongside negotiated settlements in his practice mix. He appears in bankruptcy courts and in other forums where business disputes and financial claims are resolved.

Morris maintains his practice at Morris & Morris Lawyers, P.L.L.C. He is admitted to practice in Michigan and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. His current practice centers on creditor and debtor rights and related business-law litigation and counseling.
