About Thomas M. Hensel

Thomas M. Hensel Jr. began his legal path in Michigan. He earned a B.S. in Business from Western Michigan University in 1992 and a J.D. from Wayne State University in 1996. Those credentials set the stage for a practice rooted in Michigan's federal and state courts.

He entered professional practice at the UAW Legal Services Plan, where he served as a staff lawyer beginning in 2000. That role put him before clients dealing with employment and consumer concerns, and gave him steady courtroom exposure early in his career. In 2003 he joined Butler, Butler & Rowse-Oberle, PLLC as an associate lawyer. There he handled a broader docket and took on a larger share of case management and client counseling.

In 2008 Hensel opened his own firm, Hensel Law Office, PLLC. Running his own practice required a different skill set. He managed office operations, client intake and courtroom strategy. Establishing a small firm also meant he often handled cases from start to finish, which shaped the way he approaches client matters today.

Hensel is admitted to practice in Michigan and the federal courts sitting in the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. He maintains memberships in several professional organizations, including the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Consumer Bankruptcy Association. Those memberships keep him engaged with current issues in bankruptcy law and provide access to continuing legal education and peer discussion.

Over the years his work has centered on consumer bankruptcy and related debtor-side issues. He has represented individuals in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases and advised clients on the practical implications of bankruptcy filings. His practice emphasizes procedural accuracy and client communication, reflecting the practical demands of consumer bankruptcy practice.

Colleagues and clients see a lawyer who handles routine courtroom obligations and the administrative tasks that come with small-firm practice. He has moved from staff lawyer to associate to firm owner, carrying lessons from each role into the next. He continues to accept cases through Hensel Law Office, PLLC. He handles consumer bankruptcy and related debtor matters in his current practice.
