About Theodore Cedric
Theodore Cedric Chen followed an unconventional path into law. He earned a B.A. in English from Oberlin College in 1985, then completed an M.A. in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago in 1986. More than a decade later he returned to graduate study and received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1999.
After law school he entered the California legal community. He is admitted to the State Bar of California. His academic background in literature and language has shaped how he approaches legal problems — he tends to favor close reading, structured argument, and precise drafting.
Over the years Chen has applied those skills across a range of legal tasks. He has worked on matters that required detailed written advocacy and careful statutory interpretation. Colleagues describe his style as deliberate and detail-oriented. He balances an analytical approach with clear written explanations so clients and other lawyers can follow complex points.
His earlier study of English informs day-to-day practice. The discipline of literary analysis translated into a practical ability for parsing dense text and organizing persuasive narratives. He often handles research-heavy assignments and prepares documents that aim to be both legally rigorous and readable.
Chen’s practice is based in California. He has maintained involvement in state law matters since completing his J.D. He is comfortable working in transactional and advisory settings that demand methodical drafting, though he also undertakes tasks that require careful legal research and written submissions.
He continues to practice law in California, where his work emphasizes clear writing, close analysis of legal texts, and practical problem solving for clients. He currently focuses his practice on serving clients in California, applying his background in English and law to legal analysis and written advocacy.
