About Tara

Tara Swartz graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1998 with degrees in journalism and sport management. She went on to earn her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 2001. Those formative years combined reporting instincts and an interest in organized systems. They shaped a lawyer who pays attention to detail and to the facts that matter.

After law school she entered private practice and gained admission to several jurisdictions. She is licensed to practice in Massachusetts, before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and in Kansas and Missouri. That multi-jurisdictional standing has allowed her to handle matters that cross state lines and to advise clients facing both state and federal issues.

Her career has been centered in private practice. Over time she has worked on a variety of matters and has represented clients in courtroom proceedings and in other dispute-resolution settings. Her background in journalism informs how she prepares a case. She looks for gaps in narratives and assembles records so they tell a clear story. She also spends time counseling clients on practical next steps when litigation is not the best path forward.

Colleagues describe her approach as methodical. She breaks complex matters into discrete questions. She examines statutory language, agency rules, contracts and case law to identify what is at stake. That method has been applied across different factual contexts. She moves between pleadings, negotiation and trial preparation as the situation requires.

In private practice she has maintained a local presence while also taking on matters that require coordination across states and, where appropriate, appellate filings in the First Circuit. She runs Swartz Law, LLC, which serves as the base for her practice. The office handles intake, case management and client communications in-house. She keeps a steady schedule of client work, filings and courtroom appearances.

Outside the courtroom she draws on an undergraduate background in journalism to draft clear correspondence and to explain legal options in plain language. She also leans on her sport management studies when cases involve organizational or governance questions. Her current practice is focused on representing clients in state and federal matters in Massachusetts, Kansas and Missouri, and on matters before the First Circuit.
