About Sweta
Sweta Khandelwal trained in two legal systems. She studied at the Faculty of Law, Delhi University where she completed her LL.B., and later earned an LL.M. from UCLA School of Law. Before moving into private practice in California she also qualified as a Chartered Accountant through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. That combination of legal and accounting credentials shapes how she approaches client matters.
Her early professional years included a position as an associate at The Chugh Firm in 2006, a role that exposed her to the mechanics of employer-sponsored immigration and corporate compliance. In 2011 she opened her own practice. She has served as principal lawyer at her namesake firm since then. She is admitted to practice in California.
Khandelwal’s practice centers on immigration law. She has been active in the American Immigration Lawyers Association at both the national and local levels since 2011. Locally she served as chair of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter in 2013–2014 and earlier as chair-elect. She has held liaison responsibilities with the San Jose Customs and Border Protection unit of the Department of Homeland Security and later took on media liaison duties for the chapter. At the national level she is a member of AILA’s Business Immigration Committee and its Law Student Committee, roles that keep her connected to developments in employer-based immigration and the next generation of practitioners.
Her background in accounting informs the way she handles business immigration work. Clients who employ international talent often need guidance on visa classification, payroll and tax implications, and documentation to support petitions. Khandelwal’s training allows her to examine submissions with an eye toward both legal sufficiency and the financial records that underpin employer eligibility and compliance. She has also been active in local professional circles outside of immigration law, including a stint as director of creative content for the Silicon Valley Indian Professionals Association in 2010–2011.
In her private practice she takes on matters for employers and individuals, advising on corporate transfers, employment-based petitions, and compliance with immigration-related workplace requirements. She maintains memberships in professional associations that keep her engaged in the evolving regulatory and administrative landscape. Her current practice focuses on business immigration and related employer compliance matters.
