About Susham Mahendra

Susham Mahendra Modi earned her law degree from Pennsylvania State University’s Dickinson School of Law in 2010 after completing a bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2007. She entered the legal world at a moment of brisk change in immigration practice and began applying classroom learning to client work almost immediately. Her academic background set a practical tone for a career that has mixed courtroom work, clinic practice and teaching.

Fresh out of law school, Modi worked as a Lawyer Advocate at Harvard Law School’s Immigration and Refugee Clinic in 2010. That role placed her on the front lines of client representation and policy-minded work. The following year she moved into an academic role as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center, teaching law students while maintaining an active practice. In 2012 she founded The Modi Law Office, PLLC, establishing her own firm to handle matters she had begun to take on throughout those early years.

Her practice has drawn on those clinic and classroom experiences. She has spent much of her career on immigration matters and related proceedings. That includes direct client representation, filings and appearing in administrative hearings. Colleagues and clients have noted her steady handling of procedural issues and attention to the facts of each case. She has balanced individual casework with the administrative side of immigration law.

Modi has been active in professional associations. She joined the American Immigration Lawyers Association in 2011 and has remained a member. She is also a member of the Houston Bar Association since 2014. Those affiliations have kept her connected to shifting practice norms and regulatory developments in Texas, where she is licensed to practice.

Her time teaching at the University of Houston Law Center reflects an interest in training the next generation of lawyers. Students under her instruction worked on clinic-style problems and courtroom preparation. That period of teaching ran alongside the establishment of her firm, and both activities informed each other: classroom lessons shaped practical case strategies and real-world cases enriched seminar discussions.

Modi practices through The Modi Law Office, PLLC, and conducts client work in Texas. Her current practice focuses on immigration-related matters and administrative proceedings.
