About Susan

Susan James earned a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 2000 after earlier study in the humanities. She completed a master's degree in American literature at Syracuse University in 1993 and received a B.A. in English from California State University, San Diego State University in 1989. Her academic path spans literature and law, and those pursuits shaped the approach she later brought to legal practice.

After finishing law school, James moved into private practice and was admitted to the bar in New York. Over the years she has practiced law in that jurisdiction. Her legal career has been built on the foundations of research, document drafting and client counseling. She has worked on matters requiring careful statutory reading and clear written advocacy. Those responsibilities reflect both her legal training and earlier academic work in English and American literature.

Colleagues describe James as precise in drafting and attentive to language. Her background in literary studies gave her tools for parsing complex texts and for organizing arguments in writing. She applies those skills to pleadings, motions and contractual documents. She also places emphasis on explaining legal issues plainly to clients, an approach that echoes her years studying and teaching literary analysis.
