About Susan J.
Susan J. Clouthier took a nontraditional path into the law. She completed a bachelor’s degree in music performance at Baylor University in 2000, then returned to school and earned her J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 2007. The combination of performance training and legal education informs her practice; she is known for clear oral argument and careful written work.
After law school she moved into federal and state practice in Texas. In 2015 she established Clouthier Law and serves as its owner and principal lawyer. Over the years she has built a practice that operates in multiple venues. Her admissions include the United States Supreme Court and a host of federal circuit courts, alongside the federal district and bankruptcy courts covering the Southern, Western, Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas. She is also admitted in the state of Texas.
Clouthier’s membership roster reflects the two strands of her work: appellate and bankruptcy. She belongs to the Bar Association of the Federal Fifth Circuit and the Texas Bar Association’s Appellate Section. She is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and holds membership in the United States Supreme Court Bar. Local bar involvement continues as well through the Houston Bar Association and the Texas Bar College.
Her approach to cases is methodical. She files appeals, briefs complex issues and appears in district and circuit courts when matters proceed beyond trial. She also represents parties in bankruptcy proceedings and handles related contested matters in the bankruptcy courts for the major Texas districts. Peers describe her work as steady and precise; she tends to emphasize preparation and clarity in written filings.
Outside the courtroom, Clouthier participates in professional and community legal organizations. She belongs to Texas Women Lawyers and the Christian Legal Society. Those associations, along with continuing bar education activities, keep her engaged with developments in appellate practice and insolvency law.
Clients and colleagues say she brings a musician’s attention to timing and cadence into legal advocacy. She balances oral advocacy and written persuasion, aiming to present issues in a way that judges can follow. She maintains an active practice through Clouthier Law and handles bankruptcy and appellate matters across state and federal courts.
