About Stuart
Stuart Sandweiss combines training in accounting and law in a career that crosses courtroom practice and tax matters. He earned a B.G.S. from the University of Michigan in 1985 and became a Certified Public Accountant after completing studies at Wayne State University in 1990. He later turned to the law, taking courses abroad in international law and completing a J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1999.
Early legal training included summer programs at McGill University and study in Jerusalem through Tulane and Cardozo-affiliated programs. Those experiences preceded a judicial externship in 1999 with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The externship gave him exposure to federal civil practice and court procedures at the start of his legal career.
Sandweiss maintained a public accounting practice as a CPA at Sandweiss & Sandweiss P.C., and he moved into private practice in law at the turn of the century. He opened Sandweiss Law Center, P.C. in 2000 and later took roles in group practices in the Detroit area. Records show he worked with the Metro Detroit Litigation Group in 2017 and joined the Metro Detroit Bankruptcy Law Group in 2018. That same year he also served as president of Legal Solutions Group, P.C.
His bar associations and professional memberships reflect a dual identity as both accountant and lawyer. He has belonged to the State Bar of Michigan and the American Bar Association since 2000, and to accounting groups including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants since 1990. He is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.
Within the State Bar of Michigan, Sandweiss has been active in the Consumer Law Section. He served as secretary from 2011 to 2014, sat on the council from 2010 to 2019, and was chairperson of the section in 2017–2018. He also contributed to the SCAO Forms Committee’s General Civil Work Group between 2012 and 2018.
Admitted to practice in Michigan and in several federal forums, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the U.S. Tax Court, he handles matters that bridge bankruptcy, consumer law and tax accounting. He currently practices at the Metro Detroit Bankruptcy Law Group, handling bankruptcy and related matters.
