About Stuart
Stuart Matthews built a career that crosses law, policy and practical office management. He arrived at immigration law after study in international affairs and trade. His academic path began with a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Trade and Music Business from Belmont University, continued with a Master of Arts in International Affairs from American University, and culminated in a J.D. from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where he studied immigration law and policy.
The early years of his professional life were spent in support roles inside immigration practices. In 2001 he joined Ford & Associates as an immigration paralegal and firm manager. He then moved to Maggio + Kattar in 2005 as a senior immigration paralegal. Those positions put him inside complex casework and the day-to-day operations of immigration firms.
In 2008 he served as a judicial clerk at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review at the Baltimore Immigration Court. The following year he worked as a student lawyer in the University of Maryland School of Law Immigration Clinic. By 2010 he was a senior immigration paralegal at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, where he supported higher-stakes litigation and administrative matters.
In 2015 Matthews transitioned to a role as a business immigration lawyer at Ogletree Deakins. He took on employer-side immigration cases and workplace-related immigration issues. One year later, in 2016, he founded Matthews Immigration Group and has led the firm since then. The decision to open his own practice returned him to direct client work and firm leadership.
Matthews maintains memberships across a broad set of professional organizations. He is a current member of the State Bar of Maryland and holds memberships in the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association and the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association. He also belongs to the North Carolina Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the Wake County Bar Association and Sigma Xi.
His work draws on both frontline case experience and institutional knowledge of immigration courts and employer processes. He has experience handling family-based petitions, employment-based cases, removal defense, and administrative filings. Colleagues describe him as methodical; clients have noted his hands-on approach. He practices in Maryland, where he is licensed and active in bar activities.
He currently focuses his practice on immigration matters at Matthews Immigration Group.
