About Steven
Steven Walk built his academic foundation at two well-known institutions. He earned a B.A. in political science from Emory University in 1975, then went on to receive a J.D. in business law from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law in 1979. The combination of political science, law and later accounting shaped the path his career would take.
After law school he entered public service. In 1982 he joined the Office of Chief Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service as a senior trial lawyer. There he handled litigation matters on behalf of the Service and developed experience in courtroom procedure and tax dispute resolution. The position gave him exposure to complex tax controversies and trial practice at a national level.
He moved to the private sector in 1987 when he became a Tax Principal at Ernst & Young LLP. At Ernst & Young he worked on a range of tax issues for corporate and individual clients. His time in public and private roles deepened his practical understanding of tax law, compliance and the interplay between accounting and legal strategies.
In 2001 he established his own practice, listed as Steven M. Walk JD, CPA, where he serves as principal. He is licensed as a certified public accountant in Ohio and is admitted to practice in the State of Ohio and before the United States Tax Court. That combination of credentials informs the services he offers and allows him to advise on matters that cross legal and accounting lines.
Colleagues and clients have noted that his background—trial experience at the IRS, tax practice at a major accounting firm and professional accounting certification—gives him a layered perspective. He has spent decades working through the procedural and substantive aspects of tax controversies. His work tends to emphasize careful analysis of tax positions, practical courtroom tactics and attention to the record in litigation.
In day-to-day practice he handles tax disputes and representation in tax court proceedings, along with related tax accounting issues. His current practice focuses on tax litigation and representation before the United States Tax Court and on Ohio tax matters.
