About Steven N

Steven N Eckert trained first as an engineer and later as a lawyer. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 1998 and went on to complete a J.D. at Loyola University New Orleans in 2003, where his studies included both common law and civil law traditions. His background blends technical training and courtroom experience.

After college Eckert worked as an engineer for Union Carbide Corporation in 1996. He then shifted toward law, serving as a federal judicial extern in 2002 for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana while finishing law school. That courtroom exposure came early in his legal education and informed his approach to litigation.

Following admission to practice, Eckert joined the Cameron County District Lawyer’s office as an Assistant District Lawyer in 2005. He spent several years in the county system, handling prosecutions and gaining practical courtroom experience at the state level. In the ensuing decade he became involved in indigent defense work. In 2013 he joined the Cameron County Indigent Defense Program, taking on representation for clients appointed by the county.

In 2014 he added federal appointments to his roster by joining the Criminal Justice Act Panel. That panel assigns counsel for indigent defendants in federal criminal matters. Eckert’s participation placed him in both state and federal arenas, handling appointed matters and navigating the procedural differences between the two systems.

Eckert holds a Lawyer Ad Litem certification from the Texas Bar. That credential authorizes him to accept court appointments in certain juvenile and guardianship matters. Across his career he has moved between public appointments and private practice, applying courtroom experience gained in county and federal settings.

He now operates from the Eckert Law Office PLLC. The firm handles criminal matters and court-appointed cases, reflecting the mix of prosecution and defense work that has marked his career. His practice serves clients in Texas and Mississippi, and he continues to accept appointments under the Criminal Justice Act and local indigent defense programs when appropriate.

He currently practices at Eckert Law Office PLLC, representing clients in criminal matters in both state and federal court.
