About Steven
Steven Kazan graduated from Brandeis University in 1963 and earned his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1966. He entered public service soon after law school, taking a post in 1967 as assistant to the general counsel in the Appellate Litigation Division of the Interstate Commerce Commission. That early work placed him in the middle of federal regulatory appeals and appellate briefing during a busy period for the agency.
In 1969 he joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California as an assistant United States lawyer in the Civil Litigation Division. He handled federal civil matters for the government before moving to plaintiffs’ practice in 1971 as an associate at Werchick & Werchick, where he worked on medical malpractice litigation. Three years later, in 1974, he helped found Kazan, McClain, Satterley & Greenwood APLC and served as a founding, senior and managing partner. Over the decades he has practiced in both California and New York, reflecting a career that spans federal and state court work.
Kazan’s involvements in professional associations cover a wide range of plaintiff-side and trial organizations. He is a current member of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, the AFL-CIO Lawyers’ Coordinating Committee, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice and Great Britain’s Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. He served on the Board of Governors of the Consumer Attorneys of California from 1980 to 1995 and has been active in scholarship and legal education efforts through the Allen E. Broussard Law School Scholarship Foundation. These memberships indicate a continuing engagement with trial practice and plaintiff advocacy communities.
Throughout his career Kazan has worked on appellate litigation, federal civil defense and plaintiff-side medical malpractice claims. His early appellate work with the Interstate Commerce Commission and his time in the U.S. Attorney’s Office provided courtroom and brief-writing experience that later informed his private practice. At Kazan, McClain, Satterley & Greenwood APLC he took on management and leadership responsibilities while continuing to litigate complex civil cases.
He maintains an office in the Jack London Market area and continues to practice across the two admitted jurisdictions. His current practice focuses on civil litigation, including medical malpractice and appellate matters.
