About Steve Dusty
Steve Dusty Smith began his academic path in Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982. Eight years later he received his J.D. from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, completing a formal legal education that prepared him for practice in multiple jurisdictions.
After law school he established credentials in both Michigan and Texas. He holds membership in the State Bar of Texas and maintains an inactive membership in the State Bar of Michigan. Over the years he has combined legal work with public service. From 1999 to 2003 he served as a city councilman in Lancaster, Texas, a role that involved local governance and constituent matters. He also served as Acting Chairman of the Dallas Civil Service Board, a position that dealt with municipal employment issues and administrative hearings.
His professional life has included roles beyond courtroom appearances. As a lawyer and prelitigation manager at Reyes Browne Reilley Law Office, he oversees the early stages of claims. He evaluates incoming cases, directs investigations, coordinates with experts, and works to resolve disputes before formal filing when appropriate. That mix of case intake, investigation, and negotiation keeps him involved in the practical problem solving that precedes litigation.
Smith’s associations reflect a range of interests. He is a member of the J Ruben Clark Law Society and retains memberships with veteran-oriented organizations such as the American Legion, the Disabled Vets Association, and AMVETS. These affiliations inform his network and community engagement outside the office.
Colleagues describe him as steady in handling the details that shape a claim’s trajectory. He spends much of his time preparing files so litigators can step in when cases proceed to court. His experience in municipal roles and administrative boards also gives him familiarity with public-sector procedures and hearings.
He continues to practice in Texas while retaining ties to Michigan law through membership. At Reyes Browne Reilley he balances administrative oversight of prelitigation work with direct client contact and case management. His current practice focuses on pre-suit claims handling, case development, and client representation during the prelitigation phase.
