About Stephen Michael

Stephen Michael Kelley built a layered academic foundation before entering the practice of law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Science from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1975. He then pursued an MBA at St. John Fisher College, completing that degree in 1985. Two decades after his undergraduate studies he returned to school and received his J.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1995, where his studies included financial transactions.

That mix of management, business administration and legal education shaped the direction of his career. The MBA and undergraduate degree provided a business lens. The law degree added training in transactional and regulatory issues. He moved from classroom study into roles that combined those interests, applying legal concepts to financial and organizational problems.

He is licensed to practice in New York and the District of Columbia. Those admissions allow him to represent clients on matters that cross state and federal lines. His academic emphasis on financial transactions informs how he approaches contracts, deal structure, and regulatory compliance.

Over time he has handled matters that require both legal analysis and an understanding of business operations. His background in management science influences the way he assesses risk and structures corporate arrangements. He takes an analytical approach to negotiations and documentation, and places attention on how a legal solution fits into a client’s broader operational needs.

Colleagues and clients have relied on his combined training when navigating complex transactional work. He brings a practical sensibility to drafting agreements and advising on governance. He also works on matters where finance and law intersect, including transactional due diligence and regulatory review.

As of 2026 he maintains active practice rights in New York and the District of Columbia. He handles financial transactions, corporate governance, and related regulatory matters in his current practice.
