About Stephen
Stephen Mays trained for law after a background in business and psychology. He completed undergraduate studies at Stetson University in the early 1990s, earning a B.A. in business management and psychology. He then earned his J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law in 1997.
He began public service early in his career. In 2000 he served as an Assistant State Lawyer in Florida’s 18th Judicial Circuit. That role put him in contact with courtroom procedure and the day-to-day work of state prosecutors. Those years shaped his practical understanding of litigation and court operations.
After leaving the state lawyer’s office he joined private practice. In 2002 he worked with Amari & Theriac. The following year he was part of the team at Bross, Bross, Thomas & Mays. By 2005 he was operating out of The Mays Law Office and later associated with Mays, Henderson-Harvey. Those moves reflect a shift from government work to managing and developing matters in private practice.
Mays is admitted to practice in Florida and before the Federal Circuit. That combination of state and federal admission indicates experience across trial and appellate settings. Over time his work has included courtroom appearances and filings in higher courts. Colleagues and records show a steady practice that moves between state-court matters and federal appellate procedure, rather than a single narrow niche.
He balances advocacy learned in the public sector with the practice priorities of private firms. His career path runs from the courtroom in the 18th Judicial Circuit to private firm roles and ultimately to his own office. The record shows steady involvement in litigation and appeals, and an ability to manage both individual casework and firm responsibilities.
Today he continues to practice law in Florida and holds admission to appear before the Federal Circuit. He maintains a practice that addresses both state-court work and appellate matters at the federal level.
