About Stephen G

Stephen G Jeffery built his legal foundation at the University of Missouri–Columbia. He completed a B.S. in economics in 1973, returned for an M.P.A. in public policy in 1977 and earned his J.D. the following year. Those years in Columbia set the stage for a career that has moved between public service and private practice.

Early in his career he served in the U.S. Navy in 1981. He later took a legal post in state government, becoming general counsel for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in 1987. That role put him at the intersection of law, policy and environmental regulation. It also placed him in the kind of administrative and regulatory work that would surface repeatedly throughout his career.

In the 1990s he entered private practice in St. Louis. He joined Thompson Coburn as an associate in 1993 and progressed to partner by 1996. He remained there through 2000, then moved to Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin as a partner in 2000. A year later he returned to Thompson Coburn as a partner in 2001. Those two decades in firm settings involved litigation, counseling and regulatory matters for public and private clients.

Jeffery is admitted to practice in Missouri and Illinois and before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Seventh and Eighth Circuits. He has also taken on roles in civic and professional organizations. He chaired the Missouri Bar’s Environmental & Energy Committee from 1997 to 2000. From 2004 to 2008 he served as vice-chair for environment at the St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth Association. Those positions reflect a steady engagement with environmental and energy issues outside the courtroom.

Colleagues and clients see him as a practitioner who blends government experience and firm-side work. He has handled regulatory matters, administrative proceedings and litigation that touch on environmental statutes and energy regulation. He has worked on matters that require understanding agency processes and the overlap between state regulation and federal appellate procedure.

Today he leads Jeffery Law Group, LLC. He continues to take cases and counsel clients in matters tied to environmental and energy law, administrative practice and government relations. His current practice covers environmental and energy law, administrative matters and government relations.
