Stephen Edward Spelman is a seasoned trial attorney based in Springfield, Massachusetts, specializing in personal injury, criminal law, DUI & DWI, business law, appeals & appellate, arbitration & mediation, and white-collar crime. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut, and has experience in both civil and criminal litigation. Mr. Spelman earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He also holds a Master of Arts in International Relations from Boston University, a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. A Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst.
He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Homicide Unit of the Hampden County District Attorney's Office, where he tried over 100 jury cases involving major felonies. Following his tenure as a prosecutor, he joined Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City, handling complex civil and criminal litigation. In 1996, Mr. Spelman joined Egan, Flanagan and Cohen, P.C., a full-service law firm in Springfield, Massachusetts. The firm offers a range of services, including personal injury, real estate, estates, trusts, and planning, civil and business litigation, corporate business law, consumer protection, environmental law, employment disputes and discrimination, and criminal defense. Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Spelman has served as an adjunct Professor of Law at Western New England College School of Law, teaching courses in White Collar Crime and Securities Regulation.
He is also a trial methods instructor for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and serves as a Master of the Bench for the Pioneer Valley Inn of Court. His military service includes serving as a Colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) of the U.S. Army Reserve. He was mobilized as Chief of the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service, supervising the defense of Army court-martial cases worldwide. Mr. Spelman has also served two tours of duty in Iraq, one with Army Special Forces and another as the senior military officer at the Law and Order Task Force.
Mr. Spelman is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Hampden County Bar Association, American Bar Association. New York State Bar Association. He has been recognized for his contributions to the community, including serving as vice chair of the Resource Development Council for the United Way of Pioneer Valley. He is fluent in English and conversational Spanish.
