About Stephen E.

Stephen E. Zweig built a career that crosses scientific research and patent law. He began in the sciences, earning a B.A. in physics and biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1974. He stayed in the life sciences long enough to complete a Ph.D. in biophysics and biology at the University of California, San Diego in 1980. Later in life he turned to law and received a J.D. from William Howard Taft University in 2011.

Zweig worked in product development and operations before entering entrepreneurship. In 1985 he joined LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company, as director of research and development and operations. He spent the early 1990s shaping a startup: in 1991 he founded Avocet Medical, Inc., serving as chairman and chief technology officer. That company work was followed by advisory roles; in 2002 he served as a medical device and intellectual property strategic advisor to CliniSense Corp.

In 2007 Zweig launched a solo patent practice under the PatentAssociate name. He later added the legal credential, earning his law degree in 2011 and qualifying for practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is admitted to the California bar and to the federal patent bar, allowing him to prosecute patent applications and represent clients in patent matters at the USPTO.

His career combines bench-level scientific training and hands-on product development. That mix informs how he approaches intellectual property work. He has written and prosecuted patent applications, advised on patent strategy for medical technologies, and handled matters that intersect device design, regulatory concerns, and patentability. His background in both the sciences and in corporate research management gives him perspective on technical disclosure and on the practical needs of companies developing device and diagnostic products.

Zweig operates a solo practice, handling patent preparation, prosecution, and related counseling for clients that range from early-stage ventures to established companies. He continues to work with medical device and life-sciences inventors, translating technical concepts into patent claims and advising on protection strategies. His current practice centers on patent prosecution and counseling for medical device and biotechnology clients.
