About Stefan
Stefan Stoyanov built a technical foundation before turning to law. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991, concentrating on software automation of mechanical systems and process control. He continued his studies at Cornell Law School and received his J.D. in 2003.
His early legal career began in New York. He spent the summer and early part of his career at Fish & Neave in 2003, then joined King & Spalding as an associate in 2004. He moved to Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman LLP in 2007, where he worked on matters that drew on both his technical background and his legal training. In 2014 he founded Stoyanov Law PLLC and has led the firm since its inception.
Over time Stoyanov added federal admissions to his practice credentials. He is admitted to practice in New York and in federal courts including the Southern District of New York, the Western District of New York, and the Federal Circuit. Those admissions align with a practice that often meets at the intersection of technology and intellectual property law.
Professional organizations have been a steady part of his career. He has been a member of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association since 2003. He joined the American Bar Association in 2014. Since 2015 he has participated in the New York City Bar Association’s Small Law Office Committee and serves as a Mentoring Circle Leader, a role that pairs experienced practitioners with newer lawyers for guidance and practical insight.
Colleagues and clients have noted that Stoyanov’s engineering training shapes how he approaches technical questions. He often breaks complex systems into component parts and frames legal problems in terms that engineers and judges alike can follow. He has handled matters in federal court and has worked on appeals before the Federal Circuit, applying procedural rigor and attention to technical detail.
At Stoyanov Law PLLC he handles litigation and counseling that draw on both his mechanical engineering background and his legal experience. His practice focuses on intellectual property and related federal litigation matters.
