About Sherry V
Sherry V Neal earned her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1996 after completing a bachelor’s degree in biology and philosophy at Wesleyan College in 1992. Her academic background pairs liberal arts study with professional legal training. That combination informed an early interest in cases involving families and children.
She began her legal career in the late 1990s. In 1999 she worked as an associate at Kilpatrick Stockton. Two years later she took on a leadership role at the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, serving as director of the Grandparent/Relative Caregiver Project in 2001. In that position she administered services aimed at caregivers who step in to raise children when parents are unable to do so.
Neal is admitted to practice in Georgia and before federal courts. Her admissions include the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Those credentials allow her to represent clients in both state and certain federal matters.
Her professional and community affiliations reflect sustained involvement in issues affecting children, families and adoptive services. She has been a member of Voice for Adoption since 2003 and joined the Georgia Association of Licensed Adoption Agencies in 2008. Beginning in 2000 she served as an advisor to the State Bar of Georgia’s Children and the Courts Committee. She also has taken roles in bar governance and programming: she served as director for continuing legal education in the State Bar of Georgia Young Lawyers Division starting in 2005 and has been an advisor to the State Bar of Georgia Women & Minorities in the Profession Committee beginning that same year. Neal’s local connections include membership in the DeKalb Bar Association and the Decatur Business Association since 2007, and earlier participation in the Peachtree Atlanta Kiwanis Club from 2000 to 2009. She is also a member of the Stonewall Bar Association.
Her record shows long-term engagement with adoption and child welfare systems, and with education for lawyers who handle related matters. She draws on that experience in her everyday practice. She currently concentrates her practice on adoption, child welfare and related family law matters.
