About Sherley
Sherley Joseph-Roper built a professional life at the intersection of law and social work. She began with a bachelor's degree in sociology and later returned to graduate study in clinical social work before earning a law degree.
She received a B.A. in sociology from Barnard College in 1991. She earned a Master of Social Work, clinical concentration, from Clark Atlanta University in 1995. She completed her J.D. at St. John’s University School of Law in 2003.
Her career spans roles in both the private and public-facing sides of practice. She worked as a senior analyst at AIG, a role that exposed her to corporate processes and claims handling. She later worked as an associate lawyer at Quintairos Prieto Wood & Boyer, PLLC and at Deming Parker Hoffman Campbell & Daly. In 2018 she founded SJ Roper Law, LLC and serves as its managing lawyer.
Joseph-Roper is licensed to practice in New York and Georgia. She is also a registered civil mediator with the Georgia Commision on Dispute Resolution. That credential allows her to take part in court-ordered and private mediations in Georgia.
She holds memberships in several professional organizations. Those include the American Bar Association, the Gwinnett County Bar Association, the Georgia Association of Black Women Lawyers, and the Elder Law College. The combination of social work training and legal experience informs how she approaches client matters.
Colleagues and clients describe her work style as pragmatic. She often addresses legal questions that touch on family dynamics, caregiving issues and administrative processes. Her mediation credential is part of how she handles disputes that benefit from negotiated solutions rather than litigation.
SJ Roper Law, LLC operates out of offices serving clients in the region. At the firm she handles representation, counseling and alternative dispute resolution matters across the two jurisdictions in which she is licensed. She continues to practice law and serve as a mediator for civil matters in Georgia and provide legal services in New York.
