About Shelly
Shelly Kuennen earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Wartburg College in 2000. She continued her legal education at the University of Denver, receiving a J.D. in 2004. Those formative years gave her a grounding in both the historical context of law and the practical skills required in a courtroom.
After law school, Kuennen built a private practice that she later formalized under her own firm. In 2010 she opened Kuennen Law Office, LLC and has served as its owner and lawyer since. Her decision to lead a small firm shaped the way she handles cases: hands-on, client-centered, and directly involved in each matter that comes through the door. Running a solo practice has also required attention to the administrative and business demands of lawyering, which she manages alongside casework.
Her professional memberships reflect the kinds of matters she handles. She is active in the Colorado Bar Association’s Business Section, Bankruptcy Subsection, and belongs to the Colorado Consumer Bankruptcy Association. She also serves on the Legal Services Committee of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association. Those affiliations keep her looped into developments in bankruptcy law and in community-oriented legal services.
Colleagues describe Kuennen as pragmatic. She approaches bankruptcy cases with a focus on practical outcomes for individuals and small businesses. She has experience counseling clients about chapter filings, creditor negotiations, and related procedural issues. She also advises small business owners about the intersection of business obligations and personal financial distress. Her work often requires translating complex statutory rules into clear options that clients can use to make decisions.
Courtroom time, client meetings, and committee work fill much of her schedule. She maintains an active practice in Colorado courts and keeps current on local bankruptcy rules and procedures. Outside hearings, she spends time preparing filings, negotiating with creditors, and helping clients understand the long-term implications of debt relief choices.
Kuennen’s practice combines the operational demands of running a small law firm with the day-to-day tasks of bankruptcy representation. She participates in professional groups that address both business and consumer bankruptcy concerns and in local bar initiatives that expand access to legal services. She currently represents clients in consumer bankruptcy and related matters in Colorado.
