About Sergio
Sergio Cabanas built a practice that centers on family law and mediation. He blends courtroom experience from earlier parts of his career with years spent resolving disputes outside of trial. That mix informs how he evaluates a case and how he guides clients through divorce and related matters.
Cabanas earned a Bachelor of Arts from Berry College in 1988 and continued his legal education at American University Washington College of Law, completing his J.D. in 1991. His academic path put him on a steady professional course in Florida courts and administrative settings.
He began his legal career in public service. In 1992 he worked as an Assistant State Lawyer in the Broward County State Lawyer’s Office. The same year he moved into private practice as an associate at Womack & Bass, P.A., handling medical malpractice defense matters. That early work gave him exposure to litigation strategy and the procedural demands of trial practice.
In 1993 Cabanas took a role handling litigation support and claims representation for UNUM, covering Florida and Puerto Rico. The position involved disability insurance defense and required coordinating factual investigation with claims handling. Those duties helped sharpen his skills in case assessment and client representation in insurance-related disputes.
Over time Cabanas transitioned to building his own practice. He is a senior partner at Cabanas Law PA and has concentrated his work on divorce and mediation. Along the way he earned peer and industry recognitions, including an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and a listing in Law Office 500 for fast-growing law offices. He also pursued formal training in dispute resolution.
The Supreme Court of Florida certified him as a Court Appointed Family Mediator in 2018 and he served earlier as a Circuit and County Mediator from 2003 to 2005. Those credentials allow him to serve on court rosters and to conduct mediations in family law matters.
Cabanas maintains memberships in several professional organizations. He belongs to the Weston Bar Association, the National Association of Trial Lawyers, the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association, the Cuban American Bar Association and the Broward County Bar Association. He has been admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida since 1992.
He continues to practice from his firm, handling divorce cases and mediations for clients across the region. He currently practices divorce and mediation.
