About Scott P.

Scott P. Spector built a foundation in the law through steady study and early specialization. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Tulane University in 1971, followed by a J.D. from Tulane University School of Law in 1974. A year later he completed an LL.M. in Taxation at New York University School of Law. Those degrees set a clear path toward tax and transactional work.

His career includes time at Fenwick & West LLP. Over the years he has practiced in multiple U.S. jurisdictions, holding admissions in California, Illinois and New York. Working across those bars has meant dealing with different state approaches to tax and corporate regulation. It has also required adapting to varying procedural rules and client expectations.

Spector’s academic background in taxation informs much of his work. The LL.M. from NYU signals dedicated study of federal tax law and related subjects. That specialized training commonly supports advising on tax consequences of business decisions, structuring transactions and addressing taxpayer issues. Colleagues describe him as methodical and detail-oriented when parsing tax statutes and regulations.

His practice has spanned matters that intersect tax and corporate activity. He has represented corporate clients and advised on issues that touch on tax treatment, compliance and reporting. That mix of corporate and tax work reflects the overlap that often occurs in mergers, financing and stock-based compensation arrangements. He approaches those problems by breaking complex rules down into discrete questions.

Outside of strict deal work, Spector has been involved in counseling about ongoing tax obligations and the mechanics of implementing tax-sensitive plans. He is comfortable working with in-house counsel and outside advisers to align tax positions with business objectives. He also spends time keeping current on developments in federal and state tax law that affect corporate clients.

After decades in practice he continues to work on tax-related legal matters for clients at Fenwick & West LLP and in the jurisdictions where he is licensed. His current practice concentrates on tax issues arising from corporate and transactional matters.
