About Scott

Scott Maurer teaches and practices consumer law at Santa Clara University. He earned his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and holds a B.A. from Western Washington University. Those academic foundations anchor a career spent explaining complex statutes to law students and helping everyday people understand their rights.

He is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Katharine and George Alexander Law Center. In that role he supervises law students in client representation and classroom work. His position blends classroom instruction with hands-on clinic work, where students handle real consumer matters under close faculty supervision.

Maurer’s work centers on consumer protection issues. He guides students through counseling, negotiation and, when needed, litigation strategies that affect household finances and commercial transactions. The clinic model gives students courtroom exposure and clients access to legal help they would not otherwise receive. That practical emphasis informs the courses he teaches and the projects he directs.

Before entering academia he developed legal skills that he now translates to teaching. He has spent years within California’s legal community and is admitted to practice in that state. Colleagues describe him as methodical in case preparation and straightforward in explaining legal choices to clients and students. He places importance on clear legal writing and careful factual development, habits he encourages in every clinic participant.

At Santa Clara, Maurer contributes to a program that aims to combine scholarship and service. He oversees clinic intake, shapes student case assignments and participates in community outreach that connects the law school with local consumer advocacy efforts. The role requires balancing classroom time, supervising case work and preparing materials for student training.

Outside of the clinic, he remains involved in training and mentoring junior faculty and students who are interested in public-interest practice. His approach is practical: teach the rules, practice the skills, and emphasize the ethical duties that govern lawyer conduct.

In 2026 he continues to teach, supervise and represent clients through the Katharine and George Alexander Law Center at Santa Clara University School of Law. He currently focuses his practice and academic work on consumer law matters in California.
