About Scott Lee
Scott Lee Darling began his academic training at Yale University, where he earned a B.A. in Ethics, Politics & Economics in 1990. He continued to law school at the University of Michigan, earning his J.D. before entering a sequence of legal and policy roles that bridged public institutions and private practice. Those formative years set the stage for a career spent largely inside corporate legal departments at technology and consumer companies.
After law school Darling clerked for the Hon. A. Andrew Hauk on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in 1998. That same year he spent time in Brussels as a stagiaire in the European Commission's Directorate General for Competition (Antitrust). He joined Gunderson Dettmer as an associate in 1999, and in the early 2000s moved back into in-house work. In 2002 he took on the role of Vice President and General Counsel at Danger, Inc. and also volunteered as a mentor for BUILD that year.
His career in corporate legal leadership grew through the 2000s and 2010s. He served as Senior Lawyer at Microsoft in 2008 before taking vice president and general counsel roles at Imperva in 2010 and Trulia in 2011. He later assumed chief legal officer responsibilities at Beepi in 2015 and at Stitch Fix in 2016. In 2020 he taught as an adjunct professor of law at the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco, bringing practical in-house experience into the classroom. In 2022 he joined Upstart as Chief Legal Officer.
Darling is admitted to practice in California and has spent much of his career as a corporate legal executive at technology-driven businesses. His path includes private practice, government service, and a series of senior in-house positions that placed him in roles titled general counsel and chief legal officer. He currently serves as Chief Legal Officer at Upstart.
