About Sam Youl
Sam Youl Hwang has combined two long careers: one in law and one in theological study. He trained as an economist, became an attorney and later returned to graduate theological work. The result is a steady, quietly disciplined professional life that spans courtrooms and classrooms.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Dickinson College, completing the degree in 1980. He stayed in Carlisle for law school, taking his J.D. from Dickinson School of Law in 1984. Two decades later he returned to graduate study and received a Master of Divinity from Missio Seminary (formerly Biblical Theological Seminary) in 2005. Those three degrees mark distinct phases in his intellectual formation.
Hwang moved into private practice after law school. In 1984 he became president of HWANG & HAAS, PC. He has maintained that role for many years. The firm has handled litigation and matters that required admissions to specialized federal forums. Hwang is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court, the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, as well as bar membership in Pennsylvania. Those credentials reflect repeated work in federal and tax venues.
Over the course of his practice he has combined an analytical sensibility from his economics training with courtroom experience. Admission to appellate and tax courts suggests involvement in both trial-level tax disputes and appeals. Clients who require representation before federal specialty courts are likely to encounter Hwang’s work. He has overseen matters from his firm office and supervised litigation strategies tied to statutory and appellate procedures.
The later theological degree did not replace his legal work. Instead it added another dimension to his background. Colleagues note a careful, measured approach to complex questions. That temperament is evident in written filings and oral argument. It is also reflected in how he balances case preparation with procedural demands.
Today Hwang continues to practice at HWANG & HAAS, PC. He remains admitted in Pennsylvania and in several federal courts, including the U.S. Tax Court and federal appellate courts. His current practice concentrates on matters that arise in tax proceedings and federal appeals, handled through his work at the firm.
