About Rylan

Rylan Martin trained first as a criminal justice student and then as a lawyer. He earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration from Missouri Southern State University and went on to receive a J.D. from Washburn University School of Law. Those academic foundations paved a path that alternates between courtroom work, claims handling and the classroom.

He began practicing law in the mid-2000s. In 2005 he worked as a lawyer at Pierce & Associates, handling matters appropriate to a small firm environment. Two years later he moved into claims work as claims counsel at Stewart Title. That role put him on the front line of title issues and insurance-oriented disputes, where file-level decision-making and negotiation become daily tasks.

Martin shifted into higher education administration in 2008, taking on the role of Assistant National Dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at DeVry University. The post required a mix of curriculum oversight, regulatory attention and management. It also deepened his interest in legal education and academic program operations, an interest he would pursue in parallel with legal practice over the next decade.

In 2013 his calendar filled with short-term and contract positions. He worked as a freelance contract document review lawyer and as a contract lawyer on other projects. At the same time he taught as an adjunct professor at Santa Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law and served as adjunct faculty at Rasmussen College. Those engagements illustrate a practice built around project work, teaching and practical legal tasks rather than a single long-term firm attachment.

Across roles Martin has balanced the procedural demands of claims and document review with academic responsibilities. He has experience assessing title and insurance files, parsing contracts and explaining legal concepts to students and nonlawyers. That combination gives him a working fluency in both the transactional side of law and the classroom techniques needed to convey complex rules in plain language.

He is currently affiliated with The College of Law. As of 2026 his practice blends contract review, legal instruction and title-claims work, reflecting the mix of positions he has held throughout his career.
