About Russell
Russell D. Nugent is an attorney based in Wilmington, North Carolina, with a focus on business law, intellectual property, patents, and trademarks. Since 2004, he has been practicing law in Eastern North Carolina, where he is known for his expertise in these specialized areas. His legal journey began after he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998. This strong educational foundation laid the groundwork for his future endeavors in law. In 2001, Russell pursued his Juris Doctor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated in 2004.
His studies concentrated on intellectual property law, a field that would become central to his career. Prior to obtaining his law degree, he passed the patent bar in 2003, becoming a registered patent agent. This achievement allowed him to handle the requirements of patent law effectively — This gives a unique advantage in his practice. Russell began his legal career representing clients in personal injury matters, gaining experience in litigation and client advocacy. By 2009, he had advanced to a managerial role, overseeing a team of professionals for one of the country’s leading Plaintiffs’ attorneys, Greg Jones. This position developed his leadership skills and broadened his knowledge of the legal field.
However, his focus on intellectual property soon led him to a new direction in his career. In 2012, Russell made a significant transition to providing patent prosecution services to law firms in China and Taiwan. This international experience broadened his perspective and allowed him to work with diverse clients on complex intellectual property issues. In 2014, he joined The Humphries Law Firm as the firm’s Intellectual Property counsel, where he continues to offer his expertise in patent and trademark matters. His role at the firm has solidified his standing as a trusted advisor in the field. Russell is an active member of the New Hanover County Bar Association and the North Carolina State Bar.
His dedication to his practice is recognized; he was recognized in the 2023 Legal Elite list for his contributions to intellectual property law. Fluent in English and conversational in Spanish, Russell is well-equipped to serve clients, ensuring effective communication and understanding. His commitment to excellence in the legal profession continues to drive his success in Wilmington and beyond.
