About Russell J.
Russell J. Berkowitz graduated from Drake University with a B.S. in 1982 and earned his J.D. from Drake University Law School in 1985. He completed his legal education in the mid-1980s and went on to build a trial practice in Connecticut. His academic background provided the basis for a courtroom-centered career that spans several decades.
He joined Berkowitz & Hanna LLC as a lawyer in 1997. That step marked a long tenure at a firm known locally for handling contested civil matters. Over the years he has been a steady presence at trials and hearings, often taking cases to verdict. His trial work extends across civil litigation and medical malpractice, where jury trials and complex evidentiary battles are common.
Berkowitz holds the Certified Civil Trial Advocate credential from the National Board of Trial Advocacy. That certification reflects additional training and testing in trial practice. He is also a fellow of the American Board of Trial Lawyers and of the American Academy of Medical Malpractice Lawyers, affiliations that indicate peer recognition among courtroom practitioners.
Beyond those fellowships he maintains memberships in several professional groups. Those include the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the Fairfield County Regional Bar Association, the Roscoe Pound Foundation, American Trial Counsel and the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He participates in the bar and trial lawyer communities through those organizations, attending events and contributing to discussions on litigation practice.
Colleagues describe Berkowitz as a lawyer whose calendar is shaped by courtroom deadlines. He prepares cases for trial in a hands-on way. He handles witness preparation, expert discovery and the strategic choices that arise before and during trial. Clients have brought him matters that require sustained litigation rather than quick settlements.
The arc of his career moves from a Missouri law school diploma to sustained practice in Connecticut courts. He remains an active trial lawyer at Berkowitz & Hanna LLC and continues to handle civil and medical malpractice litigation in state courts. His current practice focuses on civil trials and medical malpractice cases.
