About Roy
Roy Eisenhardt built the foundations of his legal life at Berkeley Law and Dartmouth. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He returned to the Bay Area for legal training and earned an LL.B. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1965.
His association with Berkeley Law stretches across decades. Early on, he returned to campus as a visiting professor in 1978. That role placed him in classrooms where he engaged with students and faculty during a period of change on American law school campuses. More than three decades later, he again took up a teaching role as a lecturer in law in 2011. Those appointments bookend a long relationship with the school and show a recurring commitment to legal education.
Eisenhardt’s background in psychology and law suggests an interest in how people and institutions operate. He moved between practice and academia, bringing practical perspectives into the classroom. Students who encountered his courses have been exposed to someone who has experienced both sides of the bench and the lecture hall. His teaching stints were notable for being spread out over time rather than clustered, which allowed him to return to the law school with fresh perspectives.
Outside of the classroom, his work has been anchored at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where he held official appointments. That environment afforded him opportunities to teach, mentor, and take part in the intellectual life of a major public law school. Over the years he has been part of seminar rooms and broader faculty conversations that shape the school's curriculum and approach to legal issues.
Colleagues and students remember him for a measured approach in lectures and an ability to relate doctrinal points to broader institutional and social concerns. His academic training in psychology sometimes surfaced in how he framed legal problems, emphasizing human behavior alongside statutory and case law. He has taught both introductory and advanced topics during his visits and lectures.
Today, Roy Eisenhardt continues to be associated with the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He remains engaged in teaching and scholarship at the law school and in programs connected to the university, where his current practice focus is teaching and legal scholarship at UC Berkeley School of Law.
