About Rodney James
Rodney James Hatley is the founder of Hatley Law Group, A P.C., based in San Diego, California. Since 1992, he has been practicing law in California, focusing on estate planning and tax law. The firm provides a range of services, including drafting trusts and wills, creating comprehensive estate planning documents, and resolving complex probate issues. Under Mr. Hatley’s leadership, the firm has established a reputation for its approach and expertise in navigating the details of estate law. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Hatley pursued higher education with determination — He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Rhodes College in 1983. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1986.
During his time in law school, he actively contributed to the law review, showcasing his commitment to legal scholarship and writing. His academic achievements laid a strong foundation for his future legal career. In 1996, Mr. Hatley furthered his education by completing a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation at the University of San Diego School of Law. This advanced degree gave him specialized knowledge in tax law, enhancing his ability to serve clients effectively. Before founding Hatley Law Group, he gained diverse legal experience that shaped his practice. Initially, he began his career in personal injury litigation, where he developed his skills in advocacy and negotiation. Subsequently, he served in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps, taking on roles such as criminal defense counsel and Special Assistant U.S.
Attorney. His military service was marked by commendable achievements, including receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal twice for his outstanding performance. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Hatley is deeply committed to community service in San Diego. He volunteers with the San Diego Nice Guys, an organization dedicated to supporting those in need. Furthermore, he has served on the board of directors of the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club, contributing to local initiatives and fostering community engagement. His involvement reflects his belief in giving back and positively impacting the lives of others. Mr. Hatley is licensed to practice law in both California and Tennessee.
He is also admitted to practice before several federal courts, including the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the U.S. Tax Court. The U.S. Supreme Court.
