About Rod
Rod Kight took a nontraditional path into the law. He graduated from Furman University in 1994 with a B.A. in Philosophy and earned his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. The study of philosophy informed an analytical approach to legal problems early in his career and carried through to the types of matters he later handled.
After law school he became a partner at Kight Law in 1999. He has been associated with that firm since the start of his legal career. In 2015 he expanded his practice by creating Kight on Cannabis, a practice that concentrates on the legal issues surrounding the cannabis industry. That move reflected a shift in the legal landscape and a desire to address questions that were becoming increasingly common for business owners and practitioners.
He is admitted to practice in North Carolina and Oregon. His professional memberships include longstanding participation in the North Carolina Bar Association since 1999 and membership in the National Cannabis Bar Association beginning in 2016. Locally, he serves on the Pro Bono Committee of the 28th Judicial District Bar and sits on the board of directors for OnTrack. He also holds membership in the North Carolina Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Council, which aligns with aspects of his casework.
Kight’s work spans regulatory, business and insolvency matters as they relate to cannabis enterprises and other clients. He regularly addresses licensing questions, compliance issues and the transactional needs of businesses operating in a highly regulated field. Because cannabis remains regulated at both state and federal levels, many clients find themselves confronting licensing, banking and restructuring issues at once. Kight handles those cross-cutting problems, counseling clients on options and legal constraints without overstating likely outcomes.
Today he practices through Kight on Cannabis and maintains his association with Kight Law. His day-to-day work combines counseling on regulatory compliance, transactional arrangements and bankruptcy-related matters for business clients. He currently practices cannabis and bankruptcy law in North Carolina and Oregon.
