Robin L Schmid grew up studying systems of law and society. She earned a B.S. in criminal justice, sociology and political science from Western Michigan University in 1984 and took her law degree at Michigan State University, receiving her J.D. in 1989. Those credentials set the stage for a career spent largely in Alaska but spanning state and federal courts.
Her early professional life included a stint in academia. In 1993 she served as an adjunct professor at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, teaching courses that drew on her grounding in criminal justice. She moved into private practice and by 1997 was operating as a sole practitioner. That period gave her wide exposure to the kinds of cases that typically come to small firms in Alaska.
She later held a series of public-sector roles. In 2007 she worked as an assistant district lawyer for the State of Alaska. Two years after that she accepted a position as an assistant attorney general in the State of Alaska Department of Law, joining the office in 2009. In 2013 she took on municipal responsibilities as the municipal lawyer for the City and Borough of Sitka. Those roles added layers of courtroom and advisory experience to her résumé.
Schmid is admitted in multiple jurisdictions. She is licensed to practice in Alaska and Michigan, and she has federal admissions that include the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She also maintains memberships in professional organizations, including the National College of DUI Defense and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Her work has covered criminal defense and municipal law, and her time in state legal offices gave her familiarity with administrative processes and prosecutorial practice. She has handled matters at the local level for municipal clients and taken cases into state and federal courts when necessary. She has combined courtroom work with advisory work for government clients over the years.
Today she practices under the name Robin Schmid - Affordable Alaskan Lawyer. Her office represents individuals and local governments in Alaska.
