About Robert William Trey
Robert William Trey Harrell built his path to law from a solid academic start in South Carolina. He earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of South Carolina in 2008, then took his law degree from Charleston School of Law in 2011. The two degrees sit at the center of a career that has been rooted in courtroom work and public service.
Early in his career Harrell served as a law clerk for the South Carolina Judicial Department. That role gave him exposure to a wide range of matters and to the practical workings of judges’ chambers. He spent time researching legal questions, drafting memoranda and observing how judges manage cases and rulings. Those experiences shaped his approach to litigation and to the preparation that trials require.
He moved from the clerkship into prosecution as an Assistant Solicitor in the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office. In that post he handled courtroom responsibilities typical of a trial attorney, including motions practice, hearings and jury trials. The solicitor’s office work put him into frequent contact with law enforcement, victims and defense counsel. It also grounded him in the procedural and substantive rules that govern criminal proceedings in South Carolina.
Harrell remains active in several professional circles. He is a member of the Palmetto Professional Society, the Charleston Lawyers Club and the Federal Bar Association. Those memberships connect him to peers across the state and the federal bench. He attends panels and meetings that tend to focus on developments in litigation and trial practice.
Colleagues describe him as deliberate in his preparation and straight in his courtroom style. He approaches cases by breaking complex problems into discrete tasks. He aims to keep clients and partners informed, especially about deadlines and strategic choices. Courtroom work and evidence law are recurring parts of his practice, and he often returns to fundamentals when building a case.
He continues to practice law in South Carolina. His current work centers on courtroom advocacy and litigation matters in state courts.
