Robert Tiefenthaler currently serves as a District Court Judge in Judicial District 3B, which encompasses Sioux City, Iowa. His journey began in Breda, Iowa, where he was raised. In 1991, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice from the University of South Dakota. This foundational education paved the way for his legal career, culminating in a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1994. During his time in law school, he worked by interning at the Woodbury County Attorney’s office, which provided him with valuable insights into the legal system. Following his graduation, Judge Tiefenthaler passed the Iowa bar exam and began his legal career as an associate at a Sioux City law firm in July 1994.
His dedication and skill led to a partnership and shareholder position at the firm from approximately 1996 to 1999. In July 1999, he took a significant step by founding Tiefenthaler Law Office, P.C. This firm focused on various areas of law, including civil torts, workers’ compensation, criminal defense, juvenile law, and family law. He continued to operate as a solo practitioner until his appointment as a District Court Judge in July 2022, marking a notable transition in his career. Judge Tiefenthaler is admitted to practice law in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. His federal court admissions include the U.S.
District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, the District of Nebraska, and the District of South Dakota. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Iowa State Bar Association, Nebraska State Bar Association, and the State Bar of South Dakota. His involvement extends to the Iowa Association for Justice, where he served on the Board of Governors and the Criminal Law Core Group, demonstrating his commitment to the legal community. In addition to his professional achievements, Judge Tiefenthaler is dedicated to community service. He has volunteered as a youth basketball coach with Sioux City Westside Connection, emphasizing his belief in giving back to the community. This involvement supports his fostering positive development among young people in the area.
Outside of his professional and community endeavors, Judge Tiefenthaler enjoys a fulfilling family life. He is married and is the proud father of two children, as well as a grandparent to six grandchildren. Balancing his career and family responsibilities, he exemplifies a commitment to both his profession and his loved ones.
