About Robert Michael
Robert Michael Vang built a legal career that combines courtroom work, bench time and specialized training. He earned a Bachelor of Science in political science from the University of Wyoming and a J.D. from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1991. Those degrees set a foundation for a practice that has stayed centered on criminal and impaired-driving matters for decades.
His early years in practice included partner and shareholder roles at regional firms. In 1995 he was a lawyer and shareholder at Kirkwood, Nelson & Vang. He moved to Brown & Hiser as a shareholder in 2001. In 2005 he accepted an appointment as a magistrate judge for the Albany County Circuit Court, a post that gave him direct experience managing court dockets and resolving contested matters from the bench. He returned to private practice and later served as a lawyer and shareholder at Fleener & Vang LLC beginning in 2009. In 2015 he established R. Michael Vang P.C., where he is the owner and principal attorney.
Beyond firm work he has taken on roles in state committees and conferences. In 2003 he received an appointment related to the Wyoming Governor’s Conference on Impaired Driving. He also served on the Wyoming Fee Dispute Committee in 2005. Those roles placed him in contact with prosecutors, public safety officials and policy discussions on impaired driving and courtroom procedures.
Training and technical knowledge form an important strand of his profile. He completed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Practitioner’s Course and the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program overview. He has attended multiple forensic chromatography and drug-analysis programs offered through the American Chemical Society and associated training providers. Those courses inform his handling of chemical testing, blood and breath evidence, and expert witness testimony.
He holds admissions in Wyoming, the U.S. Supreme Court and the Tenth Circuit. He maintains sustained involvement in professional groups that address impaired-driving defense. He is a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association (DUIDLA) and serves as chair of its Amici Committee. He has been Wyoming state delegate to the National College of DUI Defense and a sustaining member of the NCDD. He also belongs to the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association.
His office is located in the Benchmark Building. He continues to practice through R. Michael Vang P.C., handling DUI and related criminal defense matters.
