About Robert Lawton
Robert Lawton Harper graduated from Elon University in 2017 with a degree in history and education. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2022. Those academic years set the stage for a quick start to a practical legal career in South Carolina.
He began practicing law shortly after law school. In 2022 he was a lawyer at Chappell Smith & Arden, P.A., where he handled matters for clients across the firm's practice areas. The following year he joined Smith, Born, Leventis, Taylor & Vega, LLC as a lawyer and has continued his work there since 2023. The move marked a transition to a new team and new caseloads, and it placed him in a firm environment that handles a variety of client needs.
Work in law often demands both courtroom presence and detailed office work. Harper's early professional years involved client counseling, drafting and negotiating documents, and appearances related to the matters he handled. He has built experience in managing procedural requirements and meeting deadlines that shape legal outcomes in South Carolina practice.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in case preparation and attentive to factual detail. He approaches each matter with the aim of clear legal analysis and practical next steps. That approach has guided his day-to-day work as he moved from one firm to the next and took on responsibilities for intake, research, and representation.
Outside the office he remains connected to the legal community in South Carolina. He maintains the professional standing required to practice in the state and continues to develop his practice through hands-on work at his firm. As his career progresses, he has focused on becoming more fluent in the procedural and substantive aspects of state practice.
Harper continues to practice at Smith, Born, Leventis, Taylor & Vega, LLC, representing clients and managing matters across the state of South Carolina. He is based at the firm's offices and remains active in legal practice there.
