Robert L. Keates is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of Texas. He was admitted to the Texas State Bar in 2009. His license is currently in active status. Mr. Keates is the founder and sole practitioner at Keates Law Firm, a criminal defense law firm located in Austin, Texas. He has been practicing law for over 16 years, serving clients throughout Travis County and the greater Austin area.
Mr. Keates earned his Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 2005. After completing his law degree, he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Criminal Law from Western School of Law, one of only two universities at the time in the United States offering such a program. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at an undisclosed institution.
Mr. Keates concentrates his practice in the areas of criminal defense, including DUI/DWI, drug possession, theft, and assault cases. He represents individuals in matters involving serious felony and misdemeanor charges, handling all stages of litigation from initial case evaluation to trial proceedings in both state and federal courts. His practice also encompasses juvenile law, providing defense for minors charged with criminal offenses.
Throughout his career, Mr. Keates has handled cases in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, the California Superior Court, and the Travis County District Court in Texas. He has also appeared before the California Court of Appeal and the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division. Prior to founding his own firm, he worked as an associate at the Orange County Public Defender's Office in California for over five years, where he was awarded the Don Simms Trial Attorney of the Year Award in 2008.
Mr. Keates is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, NORML Legal Committee, and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the State Bar of Texas, the California State Bar, the New York State Bar, and the District of Columbia Bar. In addition to his legal practice, he is involved in community activities and enjoys music, traveling, brewing beer, playing guitar and banjo, and carpentry and woodworking.
