About Robert J. Tomei
Robert J. Tomei Jr. arrived at law after an undergraduate stretch studying English at Illinois State University. He earned a B.A. in English in 2009 and then moved on to Northern Illinois University College of Law, where he completed his J.D. in 2012. The grounding in literature and argument from his undergraduate years shaped a pragmatic approach to legal writing and case preparation.
He began practicing in the Chicago region and is admitted to the Illinois bar and to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Early membership in the Lake County Bar Association dates to 2012, followed by the Illinois State Bar Association in 2013. Those local ties have stayed part of his professional network as his work brought him deeper into consumer-related litigation.
Tomei became a partner at Johnston Tomei Lenczycki & Goldberg LLC in 2018. In that role he handles cases that often involve household debt, mortgage disputes and bankruptcy filings. He also serves as an affiliate lawyer for Liberty Counsel, an affiliation that complements his litigation practice in federal and state settings.
Professional memberships reflect the kinds of matters he takes on. He has belonged to the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers since 2014 and the National Association of Consumer Advocates since 2017. More recently, he joined the Association of Foreclosure Defense Lawyers in 2020. Those organizations provide resources and continuing education that inform his courtroom and negotiation strategies.
Colleagues describe him as attentive in case preparation and direct in court. He represents individuals and families in adversarial settings as well as in negotiated resolutions. His work includes bankruptcy petitions, contested motions in foreclosure defense and other consumer-protection claims. He balances courtroom advocacy with client counseling, aiming to present clear options to those facing financial distress.
Tomei’s practice remains rooted in Illinois and federal court in the Northern District of Illinois. He continues to handle matters arising from consumer debt and housing disputes while maintaining bar and association memberships that keep him engaged with developments in consumer law. He currently concentrates his practice on consumer bankruptcy, foreclosure defense, and consumer protection litigation.
