About Robert J.

Robert J. Scott studied economics and philosophy at Austin College, earning his B.A. in 1989. He went on to graduate from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in 1993. Those academic years laid the groundwork for a practice that blends legal analysis with attention to technical and commercial detail.

He began his legal career after law school and rose to a leadership role at Scott & Scott, LLP. In 1999 he became managing partner. That post has involved both the administrative demands of running a firm and the day-to-day work of representing clients in complex matters. Over time he has added federal admissions that expand where he can appear on behalf of clients.

Mr. Scott is admitted to the Texas bar and to multiple federal courts. His federal admissions include the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, the Northern, Western and Eastern Districts of Texas, and two appellate courts: the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Eighth Circuit. Those credentials reflect a practice that regularly intersects with federal procedural and substantive issues.

His practice has developed around technology, licensing and data security matters. He holds certifications that speak to practical, technical components of that work: he is a Microsoft Software Asset Management Certified Professional and a Certified ISO 19770 Practitioner through IBSMA. Those credentials inform his approach to software asset audits and licensing reviews, as well as compliance projects.

Scott has maintained an active presence in professional and industry circles. He is a current member of the Dallas Bar Association Computer Law Section and participates in the State Bar of Texas Data Security and Privacy group. He has also served on the board of Managed Service Providers since 2004. Those affiliations keep him engaged with developments in cyber issues, privacy law and technology management.

Colleagues describe him as steady and pragmatic in litigation and advisory settings. He handles licensing disputes, audit responses and contract work that touches on software and IT service arrangements, and he prepares clients for regulatory and contractual obligations. He continues to lead matters at Scott & Scott, LLP while overseeing firm operations.

He maintains a practice that centers on software licensing, asset management, and data security issues.
