About Robert J.

Robert J. Munley has built a career centered on courtroom work. He earned his law degree in 1996 and began practicing that year, moving quickly into trial practice and public defense. His professional path mixes private practice and government work, and it is anchored in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Education shaped his early years. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University at University Park in 1980 with a B.A. He later earned an M.A. from Marywood University in 1990. Munley completed his legal training at Widener University School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1996.

He opened a private practice in 1996 under the name Robert J. Munley, P.C. Three years later he took a post with the Lackawanna County Public Defender’s Office. That role put him in court regularly. He handled arraignments, hearings and jury trials on behalf of clients who could not afford private counsel.

Those years in public defense informed his approach to criminal cases. He learned to handle the pressure of trial calendars and the particular demands of serious criminal litigation. The work required preparation for contested hearings and the capacity to present cases to judges and juries.

Munley holds formal certifications that reflect his trial background. He is a Certified Criminal Trial Specialist through the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He also is Death Penalty Certified by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, a credential that aligns with experience in capital or potential capital cases.

He maintains memberships in multiple professional organizations. Those include the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Lackawanna Bar Association and the Monroe County Bar Association. These affiliations keep him connected to developments in criminal law and trial practice.

Today he continues to practice under the Robert J. Munley, P.C. name. His caseload remains rooted in criminal defense and trial work. He represents clients at various stages of criminal proceedings and continues to appear in trial courts across Pennsylvania.

His current practice focuses on criminal defense and courtroom representation in Pennsylvania.
