About Robert D.
Robert D. Michaux began his legal path at the University of Richmond School of Law, where he earned his J.D. in 2010. He entered the profession in a period of rapid change for intellectual property practice, and his early training reflected a traditional route through the Virginia court system. After law school he served a clerkship in 2011 for the Hon. F. G. Rockwell III at the Circuit Court of Chesterfield County, Virginia.
The clerkship provided a close look at trial court procedure and judicial decision-making. It also offered Michaux a foundation for handling contested matters. Following that year on the bench he moved into private practice and expanded the federal side of his work. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and in federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Michaux’s professional network centers on intellectual property and related fields. He holds a seat on a Board of Governors concerned with intellectual property law. He is active in the Virginia Bar Association and sits on its Council for the Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law Section. He belongs to the Greater Richmond Intellectual Property Law Association and the International Trademark Association. Outside strictly legal circles he serves on the board of the Builders’ Exchange Association of Virginia, a role that keeps him connected to construction industry issues and local business concerns.
People who have worked with Michaux describe a lawyer comfortable in both court filings and the detailed technical work that IP matters often require. He has handled matters that require filings in federal venues and has navigated the procedural requirements that those courts impose. His background—a Virginia law degree followed by a state court clerkship and federal admissions—reflects a mix of state and federal practice that many clients find useful when disputes cross jurisdictional lines.
He is based at Christian & Barton, LLP, where he practices alongside other lawyers in the firm’s litigation and intellectual property groups. At the firm he works on trademark and patent-related issues, counseling clients and handling litigation in state and federal forums. He also advises on matters that touch on construction and business interests, reflecting his ties to the Builders’ Exchange Association of Virginia.
Robert D. Michaux currently practices intellectual property and litigation matters, representing clients in state and federal courts and advising on trademark, patent, and related business issues.
