About Robert D.
Robert D. Erney graduated from Ohio Dominican University in 1975 with a B.A. in economics and earned his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1984. He began his legal career immediately after law school, taking a judicial clerkship with the First Appellate District of Ohio the same year. That early exposure to appellate work shaped the way he approaches litigation and legal writing.
After his clerkship, Erney moved into private practice. In 1986 he worked with Lane, Alton & Horst, LLC. Three years later he became a partner at Havens, Willis, Erney, Skrobot & Fisher. In 1998 he formed Robert D. Erney & Associates. His office is now identified as Erney Law, where he continues to practice.
Erney is admitted to practice in Ohio and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Over the course of his career he has handled matters in both trial and appellate settings. He has navigated the mechanics of state court litigation and the procedural demands of federal appellate work. Those experiences inform the way he prepares cases for trial and for appeal.
Beyond the office, Erney has been active in civic and professional circles for decades. He served as president of the Rotary Club of Columbus in 1996 and has remained involved in the organization. He has belonged to the American Association for Justice and the Ohio Association for Justice since the 1980s and 1990s, respectively. His memberships also include the American Bar Association and the Columbus Bar Association, where he has maintained ties since the mid-1980s.
In the 1990s Erney participated in the American Inns of Court, Robert Duncan Chapter, and for a period was a member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Those affiliations reflect a pattern of engagement with organizations that intersect with both legal practice and community life. He has balanced firm responsibilities with those outside commitments over many years.
Colleagues describe Erney as methodical in court filings and deliberate in preparation. He has worked across a range of civil litigation matters and has carried that work into appellate filings when required. He continues to run his practice out of Erney Law, handling litigation and appellate matters in Ohio and the Sixth Circuit.
