About Robert C. Slaughter
Robert C. Slaughter III is a seasoned trial attorney with over 40 years of experience in personal injury, criminal law, agricultural law, and military law. He is admitted to practice in North Carolina, South Carolina. Virginia. Mr. Slaughter began his legal career in 1979 as a prosecutor in Norfolk, Virginia, eventually rising to the position of Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney. In 1989, he transitioned to private practice in North Carolina, focusing on personal injury and criminal defense cases. After approximately 15 years, he returned to Norfolk in 2004 as Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney and later served as interim Commonwealth’s Attorney.
In 2009 and 2010, he served as a criminal investigator for the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction in a civilian capacity. Upon his return, he resumed private practice as a trial lawyer. Throughout his career, Mr. Slaughter has conducted over a hundred jury trials and numerous other court appearances in North Carolina and Virginia. In addition to his legal career, Mr. Slaughter served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1975 until 2009, retiring as a colonel. He primarily served in the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps but also held positions in field artillery and civil affairs.
His military service includes a Bronze Star Medal for his deployment in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. Mr. Slaughter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Virginia, a Master of Science in Agricultural and Life Sciences from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law. A Master of Laws in Agricultural and Food Law from the University of Arkansas. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, South Carolina Bar, and Virginia State Bar. His practice areas include personal injury, criminal defense, agricultural law, and military law. Mr. Slaughter is affiliated with the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Agricultural Law Association.
He and his wife have one daughter. They are active members of Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church, participating in short-term missionary work in Rwanda. Mr. Slaughter also serves on the boards of the Haitian American Friendship Foundation, the Park Place School. The American Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East.
